Literature Review
In the face of his most profound crisis, Batman confronts the threat of his backup personality, Zur-En-Arrh, and is compelled to reflect on his overreliance on technology.
Warning! Contains Spoilers For Batman #141! Batman, renowned for his crime-fighting arsenal, is now under scrutiny by one villain who believes that the Dark Knight's excessive reliance on technology might inadvertently trigger the end of the world. This antagonist, Failsafe, a creation of Batman's deranged backup personality, Zur-En-Arrh, could be uniquely positioned in the DC Universe to assert that Bruce Wayne's technological dependence poses a threat to civilization.
From Bat-shark repellent to rocket-propelled bat ears, Bruce Wayne consistently has a gadget at his disposal. However, this dependence on technology could evolve into a significant threat, as noted by Batman's backup personality, Zur-En-Arrh, in Batman #141.
Batman #141 – authored by Chip Zdarsky, illustrated by Jorge Jimenez, colored by Tomeu Morey, and lettered by Clayton Cowles – currently depicts the Caped Crusader in combat against the android Zur-En-Arrh, after this personality has been materialized within the form of the android Failsafe.
While in pursuit of Batman, Zur-En-Arrh criticizes Bruce's inclination to rely on gadgets, suggesting to his target, "you'll eventually succumb to your technology, becoming me in the process." Although many readers might initially dismiss this as Zur-En-Arrh's mere taunting, it has been demonstrated in a dystopian universe that Batman's passion for technology and gadgets could indeed lead to the end of the world.
Batman Finally Confirms the One Villain His Prep Time Can't Beat In the latest issue of DC Comics' Batman, Bruce Wayne's Dark Knight finally encounters a foe that no amount of preparation can overcome.
Zur-En-Arrh States Batman's Tech Will Be His Undoing
From Bat-shark repellent to rocket-propelled bat ears, Bruce Wayne always has a gadget to fall back on. However, this reliance on technology could become a major threat in its own right, as Batman's backup personality, Zur-En-Arrh, notes in Batman #141. It was Zur-En-Arrh that created the android Failsafe, which has become a significant threat in the DC Universe. At one point, it effortlessly conquered Gotham City, defeating the entire Justice League in the process. Failsafe was designed by Batman, to be used against Batman – and the outcome was a devastating new adversary far beyond the Dark Knight's own power level.
There is further precedent for Zur-En-Arrh's comment in Batman #141. In one of the many worlds within the Dark Multiverse, Batman became the Murder Machine. The Murder Machine was a formidable cyborg, born when an AI that Bruce modeled after the deceased Alfred Pennyworth went rogue and took over Batman's physical body. In All-Star Batman, Alfred mentioned that he is aware of plans Batman has to recreate him as an AI should he ever die. This is the exact same event that eventually led Batman to become the Murder Machine. Unchecked, Batman's proclivity for creation might very well lead him to end the world.
Batman Might Eventually Become The Murder Machine
Batman is known for his gadgets and his contingency plans, but time and again, these gadgets have spiraled out of control. When Batman couldn't let go of Alfred, he was transformed into the Murder Machine, falling victim to the AI he created. When Batman's trust in the Justice League was shattered, he created Brother Eye, which eventually
