There have been many villains who have tried to break Batman over the years, but few have succeeded like Dr. Simon Hurt. In Detective Comics #1081, Batman has been forced out of Gotham City by the Orgham family and retreats to the desert to clear his mind. It's there that he encounters Dr. Simon Hurt, a long-forgotten villain who once destroyed Bruce Wayne's mind and forced him to rely on his Zur-En-Arrh personality. Dr. Simon Hurt used to be Thomas Wayne, an ancestor of Bruce Wayne's father, who became a cultist and sought immortality from the great Bat-God Barbatos. After accidentally gaining the attention of the Hyper-Adapter, Simon became incredibly long-lived and turned his attention to destroying Batman entirely. Now, it seems that he's back to try and do it all over again, spelling major trouble for Bruce.

In the storyline, Simon, the leader of the Black Glove Society, is determined to destroy Batman. He even implanted a hypnotic suggestion in Batman's mind, intending to render him catatonic. However, Batman had prepared for such a scenario and instead developed a backup personality called Zur-En-Arrh. This alternate persona takes over when the hypnotic suggestion is activated, preventing Batman from becoming catatonic.

Now, a new twist has emerged. Batman finds himself possessed by an Azmer demon, which is gradually eroding his mind. Simon takes advantage of this situation and reappears, attempting to manipulate Bruce towards fulfilling his ancestor's evil plans. It seems that Simon Hurt ultimately wants to release Barbatos, a powerful entity.

Batman has faced numerous challenges recently, including the Azmer demon's influence and the Orgham family's takeover of Gotham City. Before he can return to his city, he must confront one final obstacle. He can either succumb to the Azmer's control and become a puppet or resist and reclaim his own mind and free will. While Talia al Ghul encourages Batman to resist, it's clear that Dr. Simon Hurt will be pushing him to submit.
