Although only six chapters of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex have been released, the story has already introduced significant developments that completely shift the narrative established at the end of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. These developments lay the groundwork for even more dramatic changes in the overall plot trajectory.
As suggested by its title, the Next Generation focuses on the evolution of shinobi after Naruto and their adventures in a world transformed since Kaguya Otsutsuki's resurrection and defeat. When Boruto Chapter #80 concluded, the Next Generation was at the center of Boruto's narrative. This was particularly evident in Kawaki's rise and Boruto's transformation into Konoha's Public Enemy No. 1.
Kawaki's ascension and Boruto's fall from grace became the central focus of the story. However, this storyline hinged on two major events. First, Kawaki's elevated status was made possible by Eida, whose infatuation with him led to her unlocking Omnipotence and manipulating many minds to see him as Naruto's son. Second, Kawaki kept Naruto hidden in a secret dimension known only to him, effectively removing the one person who could disrupt Eida's control over the world.
Cracks in the Kawaki-Eida Partnership
Time skips are typically used to advance the plot by changing the story's status quo, but this was not the expectation with Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. The plot had already been disrupted by the Kawaki-Boruto storyline, and Blue Vortex was anticipated to further develop this disruption. However, the three years between Next Generations and Two Blue Vortex appear to have caused their own disruptive effect.
This is best demonstrated by the rift between Kawaki and Eida revealed in Two Blue Vortex Chapter #6. Kawaki's apparent lack of concern for Eida's safety, despite her revelation about the sentient God Tree's intention to harm her, hints at potential tension in their relationship. Eida's surprise at Kawaki's coldness, especially considering their seemingly intimate relationship at the end of Next Generations, suggests that a heartbroken Eida could make Boruto's return more likely. Eida is the most powerful ally Boruto could recruit to help restore the original status quo.
The Road to Naruto Runs Through Kawaki
In addition to Kawaki possibly losing the one person capable of upholding his lie, the appearance of Boruto's sentient God Trees also threatens to expose him. In Chapter #6, the God Trees' leader, Jura, reveals his desire to devour Naruto. This quest will inevitably lead him to Konoha Village, where Naruto was last seen. However, no matter how many people Jura asks or kills, he will find no help because everyone believes the Seventh Hokage is dead. As Daemon points out, when this happens, Kawaki's secret will be exposed, and even Eida's charms won't be able to save him.
These two developments foreshadow a major shift in the "Kawaki as leader, Boruto as outlaw" status quo. However, they don't need to fully play out for disruption to occur. Kawaki's indifference to Eida's feelings doesn't have to end in a complete breakup; it just needs to be enough for Eida to seek an alternate means of support. Similarly, Kawaki doesn't need to be caught red-handed in his lies; people just need to start questioning Naruto's whereabouts. Either scenario, or both, would give Boruto the opportunity to win the hearts and minds of the community and secure his return.
