With Naruto transported to another dimension, Shikamaru has assumed the mantle of Eighth Hokage in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. The series resumes three years after Boruto was falsely accused of killing his father, Naruto the Seventh Hokage. Although Naruto and his wife Hinata are still alive, someone needed to step in as Konoha's new leader. Despite Shikamaru's intellectual prowess, his power level pales in comparison to his predecessors.
The first chapter of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex showcases a Konoha led by Shikamaru Nara. Throughout the Boruto series, Shikamaru has proven to be an invaluable right-hand man to Hokage Naruto, thanks to his sharp mind and quick thinking.
Konoha’s Eighth Hokage Lacks the Power of His Predecessors
Shikamaru, while beloved for his strategic brilliance, is considered the weakest Hokage in the franchise’s history, especially compared to the formidable shinobi who have previously held the title. Historically, Konoha’s Hokages have been immensely powerful, often possessing god-like abilities capable of moving mountains and moving at the speed of light. Before Shikamaru, the least powerful Hokage was arguably Kakashi, a prodigious ninja who proved his capabilities even after losing the Sharingan in the Fourth Shinobi War.
The title of Hokage has traditionally been held by the strongest ninja in Konoha's history, starting with Hashirama Senju and his brother Tobirama, who invented the Impure World Resurrection technique. They were followed by Hiruzen Sarutobi, Minato (Naruto's father), and Tsunade, who pioneered medical ninjutsu. After Kakashi’s tenure, Naruto, capable of godlike feats, became Hokage.
Shikamaru’s Merits as Hokage Despite His Lack of Strength
Although Shikamaru lacks the raw power of his predecessors, he has a record of defeating immortals, restraining Ōtsutsuki-powered foes, and playing a crucial role in the Fourth Shinobi War. His talents have been acknowledged and even considered worthy of the Hokage title by his former teacher Asuma Sarutobi and Boruto himself. However, Shikamaru previously stated that the role was too much responsibility. Yet, when the village needed him, he stepped up and fulfilled his duty as Hokage.
Challenges and Criticisms of Shikamaru’s Leadership
Despite his many positive qualities, Shikamaru’s tenure as Hokage has had its challenges. Known for his intelligence, he has made several questionable decisions, particularly in his treatment of Boruto. While Eida’s Omnipotence plays a role, it doesn’t excuse all of his actions. Additionally, Shikamaru and Amado have turned Konoha into a surveillance state, leading some to question if there were better candidates for the role.
Many fans speculated that Sasuke would be a likely candidate to become Hokage in Naruto’s absence. However, Sasuke has been labeled a traitor once more after choosing to follow Boruto into exile, driven by his belief in Boruto’s innocence following Sarada’s awakening of the Mangekyo Sharingan.
Despite the controversy, Shikamaru has been granted the role of Eighth Hokage, even though he, like many others, has been manipulated into believing Boruto is an enemy. With real threats looming and Boruto returning to Konoha in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, Shikamaru will need to prove if his legendary intelligence truly makes him worthy of the title.
